like a moth to a flame…

a good idea

off & on sleeping finally wore
off. i woke into the right mix;
little bit of blue, lotta orange,
formed up evenly & split.
everything went as planned,
right as rain, conquering
without lifting a finger.

i know why i feel so strong;
even at this hour balloons
rise; i spat mine out
of frosted lungs. ceremony
demands i spend a few hours
smoking outside, listening
to Nick Drake sing from
a rope.

he was made to love magic;
my only tricks come
from Southern Lights just
outside the empire’s visible
collarbone. still,
can’t complain.

riding high at almost five,
not thinking about anything
except whether to shave
my chin, or what i’d look-
like with short hair, or
a bandanna.

too much work: i’m
involved staring
skyward, internally debating
which lights are stars
& which are planes.
it doesn’t really matter;
they’re both alluring
through the cold air.

———————————————-

Sometimes I like to wonder who let me out, and if they aren’t looking for me through a hole in the fence thinking “maybe giving him a way out wasn’t such a good idea.” Having repeated the average evening 4 times in two days at every hour possible, the mind reels with probabilities. Good to get away from the real world. Now if someone could drop off some of those frozen strawberry bars and a few ripe mangoes we’d really be partying.

  1. dig the style of this, and am particularly drawn to that first verse… sweet.

  2. It is a sweet one indeed to be read at night.. very softly it ends at a note that is indeed beautiful..

I did indeed submit two poems to Poetry Potluck, and was debating on putting up a third (as it happens, this was the poem I was considering as my 3rd submission!) Perhaps I will link it in later today. Thanks for the kindness and for reading, I sincerely appreciate it. Take care and keep up the great writing!

  5. Almost all the heavenly bodies are alluring and more so if they are seen through the cold air.. I loved the imagery of the same…

    • As always, good to hear from you. I’m glad you liked the imagery, I chose the space stuff as a symbol mostly because I was thinking about Billy Bragg’s famous line in ‘A New England” when he says :it’s wrong to wish on space hardware” or something similar, I’m too tired to look up the actual lyric. At any rate, thanks for reading and I’m glad you enjoyed the poem. Have a good day,

      crb.

      • thanks for the comment and I will try to look up Billy Bragg… and feel your verse more closely…

        ॐ नमः शिवाय
        Om Namah Shivaya
